The Wellington Dam is one of the most significant surface water storages in the South West and Peel region of WA. However, water from the dam can only be used for limited purposes because of high salinity. This is a result of historical land clearing in the catchment, combined with reduced rainfall and stream flows.

In addition, the current water distribution network is old and inefficient. The existing open channel network results in significant water losses across the system.

• submission of environmental approvals documents (Environmental Impact Statement)

• support new resource projects.

The project finalised the new water security approach for the Southern Forests area. It included:

• updated climate and water availability modelling.

• a pump station
• water storage facilities including raw water tanks.

The package has increased water security for a number of regions, for both agricultural and community use. It is helping to future proof water supplies and boost drought resilience.

Project overview

The Scottsdale Irrigation Scheme project included construction of a new dam and water distribution network to support drought resilience in north east Tasmania. The scheme includes 92 km of pipeline, a dam, pumpstation and power station. This infrastructure will supply the region with 8,600 megalitres (ML) of high-security irrigation water per season.
