The WISER initiative is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($85.9 million) and various state governments, local councils and community groups. Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.

The Hart Lagoon Wetland at Waikerie in SA was delivered through the Waikerie Irrigated Agricultural Water Access and Security project. It is a great example of National Water Grid projects that deliver for the community, agriculture and the environment.
Project overview
The Water Infrastructure for Sustainable and Efficient Regions (WISER) initiative is delivering packages of small-scale water infrastructure projects. These projects will drive more efficient water use and build the capacity of regional communities in an environmentally sustainable way.
WISER is a nationwide funding initiative. It focuses on short-term delivery to bring benefits to communities and the environment sooner. Up to $20 million in Australian Government funding was made available for each state and territory, with up to $5 million available per project.
Five state packages totalling 23 projects have been funded with construction set to start by mid-2025. Projects are being delivered in partnership with state governments and local councils.
Projects needed to meet the eligibility criteria of the National Water Grid Investment Framework and deliver on at least 1 of 2 strategic objectives:
- provide safe and reliable water for regional and remote communities
- build resilient water infrastructure that is environmentally sustainable and culturally responsive.
Projects must also deliver a positive environmental aspect. This may include, for example:
- water recycling to reduce demand on rainfall dependant water sources
- using recycled concrete to minimise the project’s carbon footprint.
Some of the types of projects funded include water efficiency, water treatment and reuse, and water recycling. These will improve water security for both community and productive use.
Many projects through the initiative will be powered by renewable energy. Other projects will use recycled materials or refurbish existing infrastructure. This will minimise the construction footprint and reduce emissions.
