The project is funded by the Australian Government ($500,000). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.

The irrigation network supported by the Ord River has potential to expand to the Northern Territory, creating productive agricultural opportunities for the region.
Project overview
The project will investigate options to expand the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) across the NT-WA border. The business case will look at infrastructure options for delivering water to the NT from Lake Argyle in WA.
The NT region the ORIA would support is currently used for cattle. However, a feasibility assessment completed in 2019 shows the region has potential to also produce irrigated agriculture should water be made available.
The business case supports work towards the economic development of the NT.
The preliminary business case is expected to be completed in late 2023.
