New $472 million water supply system for Cairns closer than ever
The Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project in Queensland has reached a major milestone, with more than 50 percent of the project now complete
This project will provide a new water source for the Cairns region. The improved water security will support expected growth and development into the future.
This project is a great example of 3 levels of government working together to achieve for our regions.
Key achievements to date
- Completion of all concrete works for the new water treatment plant
- Completion of all concrete works for the 8 megalitre and 5 megalitre reservoirs
- 12 km of pipeline laid, marking more than one third of work on the new 30 km distribution network
- Construction started on the three-storey control building
Positive outcomes during construction
- The project has so far injected more than $59 million into the local economy through partnerships with 140 local businesses from a range of industries.
- More than 850 workers have been employed, including 104 First Nations workers.
Funding
The Australian and Queensland governments are each providing $195 million to the project. The balance of funding is being provided by Cairns Regional Council. Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Construction is expected to be complete in mid-2026, weather permitting.
