Improvement works to regional Victoria’s water quality
Reliable and quality water is at the heart of 3 new projects now underway in regional Victoria.
Pipelines and water treatment facilities are central to these projects. They will help connect towns with water supplies or allow for current water to be treated.
Planning is progressing well on 2 construction projects:
- Traralgon Tyers Interconnect
- construction of a water pipeline from the Traralgon water supply system to the towns of Cowwarr, Toongabbie, Glengarry and Rosedale
- supports around 5,000 people and will save 50 million litres of water per year.
- Clean water for north-west rural communities
- construction of water treatment facilities to improve the quality of non-drinking water to rural communities supplied by local water systems
- supports more than 750 rural farming enterprises who provide an estimated $176 million in agricultural productivity.
A third project is also being undertaken in the Forest Hill region, with a detailed business case underway.
This project will investigate connecting nearby towns to the Ballarat water supply system, including:
- Allendale
- Broomfield
- Kingston
- Newlyn
- Smeaton
- Springmount.
Pending the outcomes of the study, this could mean that around 1,200 residents could start to receive more secure drinking water. It would also allow more groundwater to be returned to the environment, Traditional Owners and made available to support the region’s $22 million potato growing industry.
The Australian Government, through our National Water Grid Fund, is providing $10.1 million across the 3 projects. The Victorian Government, through local partners, will contribute $13.72 million.
