First WISER project complete in Queensland
A $9 million leak reduction project in Far North Queensland’s Cassowary Coast is now complete. It means long-term water security for the water schemes of Innisfail, Nyleta, Tully and Cardwell is now a reality.
The project included:
- replacement of old and deteriorating pipes
- installation of smart water meters.
Project outcomes include:
- the ability for Council, residents and businesses to identify leaks sooner
- less leaks due to new, quality infrastructure
- reduced water loss for the region
- improved climate resilience for the region.
The project is the first to be completed in Queensland as part of the Australian Government’s Water Infrastructure for Sustainable and Efficient Regions (WISER) initiative.
Delivered under the National Water Grid Fund, the initiative requires projects to deliver:
- sustainable water security outcomes
- ensure the environment remains central during project planning and delivery.
The WISER initiative is supporting 9 towns across Queensland, with $57.2 million being invested in projects to deliver more efficient and sustainable water.
WISER projects are jointly funded between the Australian Government and various state governments, local councils and community groups.
Funding
The project has been jointly funded by:
- Australian Government ($4.02 million)
- Queensland Government ($4.02 million)
- Cassowary Coast Regional Council ($978,000).
