Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation

The project will support the delivery of more than 5,700 ML of additional water annually into the existing Sassafras-Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme, sourced from the Mersey River and Hydro Tasmania's Lake Parangana.
The augmentation will make water available to existing and new participants in the scheme encompassing Sassafras and Wesley Vale, on the north-west coast of Tasmania.
The Australian Government and Tasmanian Government are jointly funding the project with the Australian Government providing $15 million. Findings of the detailed business case process will inform the final cost of the project.
The Australian Government has committed an additional $100 million towards the Pipeline to Prosperity Tranche 3 Phase 1 projects in Tasmania, which includes:
- Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (this project)
- Tamar Irrigation Scheme
- Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme
- Don Irrigation Scheme
- Fingal Irrigation Scheme.
Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Planning is underway. Final delivery timeframes will be informed by the Detailed Business Case. Construction is expected to commence in late 2023 and to be completed in late 2025.
