The project will support the delivery of in excess of 5,700ML of additional water annually into the existing Sassafras-Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme, sourced from the Mersey River and Hydro Tasmania's Lake Parangana.

The augmentation will make water available to existing and new participants in the Scheme and will expand the Scheme's scope, which is based in the area encompassing Sassfras and Wesley Vale, on the north-west coast of Tasmania. 

Who's involved

The Australian Government and Tasmanian Government are jointly funding the project with the Australian Government providing $15 million. Findings of the Detailed Business Case process will inform the final cost of the project.

Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund. 

Project status

Planning is underway. Final delivery timeframes will be informed by the Detailed Business Case. Construction is currently expected to commence in early 2023 and to be completed in late 2024.
