Northern Water Supply project

The project will investigate the viability of a desalination plant and distribution pipeline in the Upper Spencer Gulf.

If built, the project would deliver a new and reliable water supply for industrial, agricultural and community use. It would be expected to generate around $750 million in economic activity annually.

The detailed business case will:

  • Confirm a preferred option;
  • Develop a reference design;
  • Undertake an economic appraisal; and
  • Progress environmental approvals.
Who's involved

The $15 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($5 million) and the South Australian Government ($10 million).

Australian Government Funding source

Australian Government funding will be provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
