The project will investigate the viability of a desalination plant and distribution pipeline in the Upper Spencer Gulf.
If built, the project would deliver a new and reliable water supply for industrial, agricultural and community use. It would be expected to generate around $750 million in economic activity annually.
The detailed business case will:
- Confirm a preferred option;
- Develop a reference design;
- Undertake an economic appraisal; and
- Progress environmental approvals.
Who's involved
The $15 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($5 million) and the South Australian Government ($10 million).
Australian Government Funding source
Australian Government funding will be provided through the National Water Grid Fund.

The project is currently in the planning stage.
