The project will see the construction of Hells Gates Dam Scheme, three downstream irrigation weirs and a new weir at Big Rocks, in northern Queensland.
Hells Gates Dam will have a capacity of 2,100GL and support around 60,000ha of irrigated agricultural land. The additional water availability will boost the region's economic activity.
The Australian Government has committed $5.4 billion toward construction of the Hells Gates Dam Scheme project. This commitment is subject to the completion of the final stage of the business case and regulatory approvals.
Australian Government funding will be provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
