The project will construct two separate pump stations and distribution networks to deliver over 4,700 megalitres of high surety water annually to scheme participants through the regions of Don and Barrington.
It will deliver over 4700 megalitres of high surety water annually to scheme participants across the Don and Barrington regions, providing water security over a 180-day summer irrigation season as well as increasing capacity for supply over the winter months.
The $54.4 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($26.3 million), the Tasmanian Government ($14.7 million) and other partners ($13.4 million). Findings of the detailed business case process will inform the final cost of the project.
The Australian Government has committed an additional $100 million towards the Pipeline to Prosperity Tranche 3 Phase 1 projects in Tasmania, which includes:
- Don Irrigation Scheme (this project)
- Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme
- Tamar Irrigation Scheme
- Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme
- Fingal Irrigation Scheme
Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Construction is expected to be completed late 2023.
