Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme Modernisation Detailed Business Case Project
The project will complete a detailed business case to assess the merits of the proposed Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme Modernisation project. The project will investigate new and improved infrastructure solutions for the scheme, including channel lining and upgrades, balancing storages, replacing existing channels with pipeline, and upgrading control and communication infrastructure.
If built, the proposed project would recover 15GL to 20GL of additional water for allocation and reduce inflows to the groundwater table by 2,000 to 3,000ML per year.
The preliminary business case will undertake an assessment of:
- service needs, economic appraisal and hydrological modelling;
- analysis of environmental, social, and cultural impacts;
- stakeholder engagement and market sounding work; and
- identified infrastructure options.
The $1.9 million project is funded by the Australian Government.
Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
The project is currently in the planning stage, with the detailed business case expected to be complete by mid 2023.
